Our clients were looking to downsize from their Federation style home and so decided to retain a portion of their land for a new dwelling.
The new portion of land contained an existing dilapidated, but much loved, timber shed, often referred to by the owners as their old party house. The brief called for a low maintenance 3 bedroom home which maximised all visual aspects of the river and could conspicuously nestle into the land. This was achieved through the orientation, choice of hardwearing finishes, and the external use of primarily a natural colour scheme (however celebrating the new dwelling’s existence through the use of an ‘Oodnadatta Track’ external orange brick wall).
With a less that attractive neighbouring property, the new dwelling is designed to turn its back on the south eastern boundary through the use of a solid bagged and painted brick wall. Mindful of retaining the clients’ ‘party shed’ style of living, the new living area opens towards both the northern and southern side, providing the possibility of an ever expandable house with a view. The old shed lives on through the joinery fit-out of the dwelling through a number of recycled timber pieces, including; the kitchen bench top, vanity bench top, back door seat, study nook desk and an internal face sliding door in the living room.
The north facing, waffle pod slab construction of this new timber framed dwelling makes for a comfortable and practical place to call home.
